Over the moon excited to share some FAB news with all my blogland friends! I submitted an article to Create With Me magazine back in September. And today I picked up the winter issue at Michael's. I was floored to discover that the article about Rebekah and I was featured in a 4 page spread. Wowza.

Now, I love each step on this art/business journey. Each one is a thrill. But this one... This one rocks more than usual. You see.... Rebekah and I have been through a lot together. I was pregnant for her when my mom was sick and dying of cancer. My baby kept me strong for my mama. Her name was the last one my mother ever spoke in this world... a gift she left to her unborn, yet already treasured grandaughter.

Then, after Rebekah was born, my psoriatic arthritis returned with a hideous vengeance. My body was wracked with pain, and I could not control my legs, arms, or hands. It was a nightmare. But my amazing husband took charge of everyone and everything else in our life, while I focussed on our baby. I needed pillows propped to nurse her because I was unable to hold her securely.

During those scarey days, I refused to give in. I stayed up nights with her on my lap, and learned graphic design and HTML. I started a new artistic career selling ebay templates since I was unable to create handmade items.

As time went on, and I was no longer nursing, I was able to return to weekly Enbrel injections. It took a long time for my hands to be limber enough to work again. But once I could, we set up my workshop area, and I began working on dolls and other prim items again. Rebekah was by my side day in and day out. She would sit at my desk, and pretty much run the show. She reminded me of all the joys and wonders in the little every day things, as only a little girl can. The more I discovered the little girl in me, the more whimsical my art became. (I say discover and not REdiscover because I think I left behind my childhood at about age 7. Thought I was all grown up, and wanted nothing to do with childish nonsense. What a goober I was!!!)

As the years passed by, Rebekah continued to be my #1 fan, constant companion, and contributing assistant. She would work in her own sketchbook, and always wanted me to use her work in my mixed media pieces. As this evolved, we worked more and more steadily together. And as you can read in the article, it was Rebekah who inspired the entire "Wherever You Are Is My Home" series we create together, and with the rest of our little clan :)

So... although every milestone is exciting. And every publication is special. This one is a gift to my heart, and I hope to Rebekah's. I can honestly say I would not be working at this artful dream without her inspiration and patience. And it's a dream come true to share this special Create With Me article with her.

Speaking of dreams come true. Remember my New Year's "resolution"? ACTION!!! That one little word has had big consequences in my life. Try it!!! Let go of everything that is holding you back. It's more than believing in yourself. It's moving forward, even in doubt. It's growing, accomplishing, learning, BEING all we are created to be. ACTION... a good word.

I also have a painting in the Somerset Studio January/February 2012 issue! So cool to be there among so many friends, teachers, and admired artists! I love, loVE, LOVE this online art community!!!

A New Year's "Resolution"...

We all think about resolutions at this time of year. Sadly, I've read more and more folks posting on blogs and social network sites, that they have abandoned New Year's resolutions. I understand the motive. As many have explained, those darned resolutions set us up for failure. We defeat ourselves before we even begin by making a huge list of things we want to improve upon "this year". Usually, it's a lifelong challenge, but this is the year, we resolve to finally beat it.

No wonder we fail.

And what a shame that we begin the year by focusing on our weaknesses. That's not really a positive way to start anything, now is it?

Though, something about abandoning resolutions really tears at my heartstrings. There's something good about reflecting, and commiting on growing. I, personally, believe that growth is essential right up until the moment of death in order for us to live a fulfilled life. I like the idea of never giving up on myself in areas where I know I ought to "do better".

Wishes, Dreams, Plans... Those are all great. But without a little resolve, most of us never graduate past the dream stage. And what good is a dream that doesn't come true? I want my reality to be my "dream life". And for the most part it is. But that is totally the result of dreams+resolve=Living that dream.

So.... as I've pondered this thoroughly, I've come to some conclusions...

I am convinced that we fail at our resolutions because all we do is focus on the negatives, but have no plan... no goal as to HOW to turn those into positives. I think rather than focus on the negative things we want to avoid, or change, we should focus on what positive thing we can focus on to be all that we "dream" we can be.

I've been thinking about my typical resolution lists over the years. Usually they have the same biggies on them. Rather than looking at them individually, I tried to discover the root cause. Then, instead of focusing on that cause, I decided to find the virtue, or practice... good habit, you might say... that would best aid in the overcoming of the challenges I want to conquer.

I've combined that thought process with what some of my friends have done the past couple of years... adopting a "word" to live by. In fact, it's a word that has popped into my life many times this past year. And I've already put it to practice a few times, and seen amazing results. My word for 2012 is:

When I'm feeling lazy,

When I'm stuck in creative cement because of undue perfectionism,

When I'm feeling an attack of insecurity

When I'm floundering on decisions...
"Action"
will be the word I use as a prompt to inspire me.

That is my resolve for 2012... To take action.

Ironically, 2011 has catapulted me into this mindset. There are some major uncertainties awaiting me in the coming weeks. I am a bit scared. But I know that no matter what happens, it will require action. And I am resolved not to lose focus, or lose heart. One of my favorite movies ever is Meet The Robinsons. Two great lessons are merged, which are such gifts to live by. One is "letting go", and the other is that as long as you keep at it, there's no such thing as failure... just another step in the process of learning what works and what doesn't. So, even if things should not turned out as I hope and pray... I will pull up my big girl bloomers, and take action to make things better. All we can do is move forward. And I intend to do that with gusto in 2012.

This is the second year, that my resolution is more of a theme, you might say. For 2011, I chose the serenity prayer. I must share that it had miraculous affects on me. In every situation, I was able to remember that prayer, and let go of what I couldn't change, immediately! It's true! No wallowing on useless worries, etc. What a gift! And I was able to focus my strength on dealing with the things I could change. It's the ultimate "choose your battles" prayer. And it got me through some tough times with true grace. I've decided to keep it as my life's motto.

Focus...

I just read a most interesting quote, "Think narrow to hit big. The way to crack a massive stone is to find the single point of weakness. The same is true with most things. Don’t worry about a million things. Work on the one that cracks the big stone open." (Chris Brogan)

Hmmm... All these thoughts flooded in. Seems like every successful person I admire, whether their endeavors were business, family life, or on a larger spiritual scale, followed that same advice. We've all heard the story of the millions of star fish on the beach, and the person throwing them back one by one... And one of my all-time heros, Mother Theresa, often spoke about how the only way to deal with the massive poverty and illness was one precious person at a time.

I've shared before about how my perfectionism can be paralyzing at times. And the irony is that my house and business are a mess. I have a thousand half-started projects. I need to start focussing on the individual pieces that need to be dealt with rather than always looking at the whole picture. I need to take action, and find that "single point of weakness", in order to crack the stone of perfectionism, and move forward.

Another Thanksgiving...And this one not nearly as "Martha Stewart" as I usually attempt.Too much on the ol' table this year... literally and figuratively.My husband has been very sick for many months.One of the things I am most thankful for is that although his ailment was serious, the surgery was not. He is on the mend, but still in a lot of pain.So... we're doing "low key" this year.Or, at least as "low key" as you can get with 6 kids, a grandbaby, a nephew, two girlfriends, a boyfriend, a dog, and a bunny.
Who am I kidding?There's no such thing as a low key dinner here any day of the year! I look forward to the noise, the scents, the hugs, the laughter.
And then my FAVORITE day of the year!!!Everyone else calls it Black Friday.We call it..."Cuddle Day"We all stay in our pj'sWatch our favorite Christmas/Old movies.Eat magnificent left overs.And, of course, cuddle.

But before "Cuddle Day" is Thanksgiving.And I have thought of what I am most thankful for this year... T...
The internet. Without it, I could not do what I do, and be a stay at home mom (and grandmom).H...Holidays that make us stop and gather.A...Art. Truly... without it, the earth would only be eh.N...New England. I am in awe of the beauty in every season.K...Kisses. I'm still here!!!

Many of my facebook and Etsy teammates are already aware that I've been very busy working on a new endeavor. My husband and I have always supported and assisted each other in our artistic projects. Our children have also become more and more involved in our art and music over the years. We really wanted to commit to working together, as a family. Rather then dividing our time between conflicting work, art projects, and family time, it seemed more wise to find a way to combine them all, and spend more time all working on what we love... TOGETHER :)

For "some reason", working under Linda Pinda Designs didn't mesh with everyone... LOL. So we decided to resurrect a business name we had created a few years ago for a special project. Now, we'll be offering all of our Artwork, Photography, and Music through our website and Etsy shop as Hallowed Hill. You can click on our banner to visit the site, and our Etsy shop, facebook, twitter, and pinterest links are there as well. We'd LOVE IT if you'd consider following our blog.

So.... what does this mean for Linda Pinda Designs? I'm not really sure, to be honest with you. I think I'll stay active here as well. I've made way too many friends and business aquaintances to leave it behind. But for the moment, my attention business-wise is really focussed on Hallowed Hill. I hope that you'll join me there to discover the new path we're taking with our art and photography. Our photography has been really nicely recieved, and has become my favorite part of our new business. The family roadtrips to capture New England countryside and urban charm is my favorite family business perk! But, I also have a dining room table overflowing with clay pendants awaiting a final seal, muslin dolls with their sketched faces, and about a dozen canvases with painted backgrounds just waiting to see who or what will appear next!

Can anyone say "Thanksgiving"? Don't ask me where our guests are going to sit. Hubby's been dealing with some health issues, so that studio was pushed to the back burner, and our projects have taken over just about every inch of living space. I've got what??? Two weeks to figure this all out??? With hubby's surgery this week. Oh my. Why, oh, why did I not have a sister who could host the occassional holiday??? One's thing's for sure... Life's never dull around here!

I will share some of those finished projects with you soon! Love you all :)

Snapshot Saturday ~Decorating With the kiddos

Enjoyed spending our Saturday morning transforming our herb patch into an All Hallow's Eve cemetery. The kids are too cute just clumping cobwebs like cotton candy all over everything. Oh, well... there will be plenty of years for "just right" decorating when they're all grown up. For now, I love having their special little touch added to our home :)

Added Tip!!!
Next time you prune the trees in your yard, put a few large branches aside. They make FABULOUS "narly trees" to lean against the front porch or even lay down in the window box. We added some orange lights and cobwebs because... well... you know... Our lives are run by kids. BUT... can't you just see some silicone dipped lights and gilded pumpkins? Someday!

Oh... and if you didn't get around to pruning those trees, most husbands are willing to go lob one off for you right now for the small promise of homemade soup. *Which he does NOT have to know you were in the process of making anyways ;)

Having a "Zazzle"Rific Time...

I opened a Zazzle Shop about a year ago, and never did much more then experiment with making some cool sneakers. But I decided to try to learn the ropes today. I'm still in the fiddling stages with getting my shop all in order. And I don't quite understand why some products that are clearly marked for one category end up in another. But I'm hoping it will be like all other tech things, and seem "so simple" after doing them a hundred times. This is my favorite piece from today. A Beautiful Day...

Today was our 27th anniversary. It was a beautiful day. We enjoyed a delightful breakfast at our favorite country breakfast place... cottage windows overlooking a little pond... perfect. Then we drove the New England backroads and took picture after picture... after picture of the landscape with a thousand stories.

I took this picture of "us" to remember the day. It's a self-portrait of sorts. Makes me think of it as a portrait "through his eyes", which I am most sure is "my best side". For over 30 years he has not only tolerated my many faults, but has claimed they add to my charm. And he is my biggest fan. Always believing in my every artistic dream and endeavor. I must say... the feeling is mutual. I think that's the secret of true love, don't you? No one is perfect. But the secret is to find the one who is perfect for you...

Our favorite part of the day was spending it with our 25th Anniversary "present", our Jacob. He made it all new, wonderous, and so spectacularly joyfilled. Every moment was filled with a precious memory I will cherish forever.

Of course, the afternoon and evening were full of the usual homework, school open-houses, middle school dances, and all the other events that take over a life. But those few wonderous hours were beautiful.

Things With Wings...

From my oldest son... to my youngest, little Jake. We took the four youngest kiddos to an amusement park yesterday. Hannah and Caleb went with dad and our friends to the "thrill rides" section, while my friend and I took all of our youngest to "kiddie land". Our three girls enjoyed the wonderful mini rides, but Jake was quite depressed just sitting in his stroller watching the slightly older kids have such colorful adventures. When they all boarded the mini merry-go-round, he started chanting "PWEAZ... PWEAZ" (which of course is "please, please" in toddler language).

Because it was later at night, kiddie land was all but abandoned, and the ride attendants could give special attention to the little ones in their temporary care. The girl operating the merry-go-round assured me that the little ones are seatbelted very tight, and that Jake couldn't wriggle his way out. HHHhhmmm... (she had never met Jake) Ok. We tried the little sleigh. It had a flat seat, sides, and didn't move on it's own. Jacob was beyond delighted. He rode around and around with the biggest smile on his face. But then his riding partner (3+ years his senior) decided she was brave enough to try a horse. Ugh... That meant Jake too, had decided he was too big for this "baby" sleigh.

The girl again assured me that the children were strapped onto the horses so securely that they couldn't possibly fall off. Me... being me... had to evaluate the worst possible scenario. "What if" the plastic buckle did come undone... "what if"? I suppose the worst scenario would be that he would be thrown from the horse as the merry-go-round spun, fall into the inner circle, slide down under the platform, and perhaps get caught up in mechanisms, or in the least get dragged between the platform and the dirt below.... death was possible, if not probable in such a case.

So, of course... I let him ride.

My husband says that makes me a good mommy. I'm still trying to work that out.

All I know is Jake had the time of his life. He rode that merry-go-round about a dozen times. He also rode the bouncy cars, the fire truck, and the boats. But that merry-go-round with the "horshes" was his favorite. I feel like I "let go" of my baby a little bit last night. You'd think I'd be an ol' pro considering I've done this 5 times before. But somehow it feels like I'm treading new waters every time. Still, my heart bubbles over thinking of watching my "baby" transform into a "cowboy" right in front of my eyes...

Now, the fact that my 11 year old daughter rode the new "untamed" rollercoaster is something I'm still trying to work through. I like that our kids are mostly fearless. It's just hard to keep my eyes open sometimes :)

I just stole this pic from my son's facebook photos. (I know, I know...) No, I can't give you a link to it. I haven't "friended" him, and quite frankly, I wouldn't recommend it. There are just some things a mother and son don't need to know about each other... LOL

But, I digress...

I saw this photo, and it tugged at my heart. I have one taken when he was 7 years old that almost matches it perfectly. We were visiting a friend on Cape Cod. Mike and I took the kids to the beach. It wasn't summertime, so there was hardly anyone there. We walked for miles. Josh had on highwater sweatpants, if I remember correctly. Almost everything ended up being a highwater at one point or another, as he grew like a weed. Now... he's 6'3". He's a hard worker, devoted boyfriend, loving brother, and caring son.

But when I look at this photo, I still see the 7 year old boy, way up ahead of me on the edge of the water, in awe of the vastness of the ocean, and carelessly chasing seagulls in the wind.

He's my first born, and I love him more than he knows...

Swing-spiration!

When I found the photograph above on pinterest.com, I knew I wanted to make Rebekah a similar one for her birthday. The kids had just been chatting about how the ol' tire swing broke, and they wanted to replace it with a swing because the tire was more difficult to control. I asked my dad to cut a couple of boards. One would be all "girlied-up" for Bekah's birthday, and the other could stay "old school" style for Hannah. I think Caleb wants another tire strung up for him :)

My dad did a great job cutting, drilling, and sanding it just right for a princess "bottom". Mike strung it all up with strong and attractived knotting. And I did the hard work of spray painting it pink and adding the ribbons. I know. I know. Don't feel too bad for me ;)

I think it came out pretty darn tootin' cute! (Yes, the grass has all died from the nine million kids who play in that area of the yard every day.) That'll be a project for another post ;)

If you're interested... It's a piece of 9"x21"x1.5" board. Dad softened the corners, and sanded it well. Then he drilled 1/2" holes, one inch from the edge. Mike bought a 1/2" cotton/poly blend rope. We needed 40' for the branch we chose. (Important to choose a very strong branch, of course) We spray painted it with a satin finish, ballet slipper pink, indoor/outoor paint. We measured Rebekah's leg "reach" to decide the height from the ground. Then we strung it up with non slipping knots and adorned it with coordinating ribbons.

This week's "Snapshot Saturday" was an easy one.
We packed up the kiddos Wednesday, and went down to our favorite beach.
It was THE MOST PERFECT DAY in every way...
(I'll try to remember how much I love Rhode Island when we're buried under 3' of snow mid-winter... LOL)

Treasuries...

Etsy treasuries... For some, they are a coveted goal... others just don't care, or don't get it. I didn't quite get the importance of them even when it was clear I was becoming addicted to creating them :)

But the more I research, the more I discover that the folks who aspire to be in treasuries are not egotistical artists who like to see their work in pretty collections... they are hard working business men and women, who take full advantage of every tool available to them. And when Etsy avails this free marketing tool that weilds such power when used skillfully and optimally... why not?

You see... the goal is not to "be" in a treasury. The goal is to be in a treasury that makes the front page of Etsy. We've all read the Etsy success stories. Seller after seller sharing their stories of hard work, quality of items, committment of time and energy... Oh... and if their item hits the front page..... they went from virtually unknown to getting thousands of clicks in their shops!

That's the power of a front page treasury. Folks go to Etsy dot com, and what's the first thing they see? A collection of items at the top of the page... A treasury. Etsy staff members choose treasuries that have some kind of "wow factor"... something that draws the shopper in to the "inner pages" of Etsy.

I chose the treasury below to make a point. This was the Front Page treasury this morning, July 26th, 2011. It's lovely. But it was the 3rd photo in the top row that hit home with me. Gorgeous, isn't it? It's almost dreamy... poetic... What's the seller offering? Five used forks. Yep. Five forks... not even half as pretty as some I've seen. Silver "plated" at that. Yet, the shop reached the front page of Etsy... a position many thousands of Etsy sellers would wish, hope, and pray for to get more exposure for their shops. Why is this seller's listing for 5 used, silver plated forks on the front page? Well... there could be a variety of reasons. But I can tell you one of them right off the bat. It goes back to my first comment about the listing.... Gorgeous.

At first glance, one thinks this is a listing for an artistic photograph. Then the potential buyer is already hooked and looks deeper to discover that it's the charming forks that are for sale. Now, we are drawn in. I wanted to see what other treasures were available. And sure enough, the shop is filled with beautiful images of items I didn't know I had to have just moments earlier. But now I do.

Photography is centrally important to the Etsy selling experience. There are tons of tutorials offered on Etsy's site, as well as all over the internet about photographing items for sale online. Every seller should study a few, and take time to put the skills into practice.

Now, there are other ways sellers work to heighten their potential to get their work/items to the Etsy front page. There are teams set up just for treasuries. And the more treasuries one is in, the more likely a shop owner is to get to the front page. But in the end, it's having good shots that will get items chosen for treasuries. And it's the eye catching treasuries chosen by the Etsy team for the front page.

I suppose that luck too, plays it's part. But from what I've seen, the "luckiest" Etsy sellers are the ones who put the most blood, sweat, and tears into their business. Taking the time to photograph your work/items well, and taking the time to take advantage of marketing tools can make a big difference.

None of us can list 3 items, sit back, and then wonder why we never make a sale. It's quality, consistency, and committment that bring Etsy sellers to the next level. So, let's grab those cameras and play a little!

My Gypsy Heart

When I was a little girl, if I, or my brothers, were being particularly naughty, my mother would say, "I'll sell you to the gypsies". Those words scared the be-doobies out of me, let me tell ya'. Now, my mom was a tremendously normal person, and a very devoted mother, so I took it for granted that this was just her catch phrase during those overwhelming parenting moments, and that she'd never actually part with any one of us... never mind "sell us to the gypsies".

But still... In those dark and quiet moments in my bed at night, I would lie still and the thoughts of a tattered wagon with mysterious travellers answering the call to remove naughty children from their homes... for a fee... would haunt my imagination. I vowed to never... EVER say those words to my own children. And thus far... 23 years and counting, I have fought all temptation to carry on that family tradition.

As I grew from a small child into a blossoming teen... gypsies followed. My mom... yes... mom again... was a very creative person. If she put her mind to something, a most spectacular outcome would delight us all. And when it came to costumes... Mom was the bomb! (of course, that expression didn't exist in 1975, but you get the idea). One particular Halloween, I decided I was too old for trick-or-treating. My family was attending a costume party, but I was too mature for such nonsense. But as the hours ticked by, I was enveloped in the excitement everyone else was enjoying as mom took old dresses from the closet, toilet paper, powder, lipstick, hairspray, and any old odds and ends to design the most elaborate and original costumes. At the last minute, I decided to join in the fun, but it was too late for a costume, right? Not with mom around! She dug a little deeper in that closet, and before you know it, I had the most amazing 'thrown together' costume with jewel toned garments, golden accessories, teased hair with streaming ribbons, and dangling earrings.... yes, a gypsy.

That costume would reinvent itself throughout the years, even well into my adulthood. And one year when I ran out of piecrust on the night we were attending a costume party, I threw together whatever I had to make a yummy apple-nutty-crumbly concoction. We named it "Gypsy/Autumn Pie" in honor of the gypsy costume I was wearing while I made it.

But it was more than just costumes... more then scary catch phrases uttered by a frustrated mom... I have discovered that there's a bit of gypsy spirit in my heart. I thought it was just me. But then I stumbled upon an entire artistic community that knows just what I'm talking about. I left home for the first time at 16. Then, at the age of 17, I travelled thousands of miles away to live on a tropical island with my love. We travelled to a far off land and lived among the local people. The only constants were our passion for each other and music. Everywhere we went, he would play his guitar, and I would write words... Each of our life experiences drove our songs into different directions and expressions. It all seems like a dream now, but there we were... on the go... with our love for each other, music, and the people we'd meet along the way.

We missed "home". So home we went. And I've turned into quite the "homebody" as I've settled down to raise my little ones. But there's still this side of me that wants to "go". Only where I want to go is more someplace inside of me then some other shore. There are people, places, and things that call to me to "become" something. And I enjoy finding them and expressing our minglings in fabric, paper, clay... or sometimes photos... or words. I dream of wagons dripping in lucious fabrics... layers and layers of colors and textures. I hear the music, and the laughter... smell the fires.... feel their glow. I can taste the wine... and his kisses. There are so many stories to listen to... and tell. My favorite place is still "home" after all these years. But my dreams take me to the most wonderous places. I am this truly traditional woman... who still has a "gypsy heart".

This painting does not capture "it", but when I sat down to paint a "cutesy/whimsical" girl, she decided to visit instead, and I knew it was my gypsy heart reminding me it was still there...

*Snapsot Saturday...

All of my country and farming friends may get a kick out of this one... We city folks have to make do with what we've got... LOL!

Hannah, Caleb, and Rebekah spent last week enjoying our parish's summer bible camp, "Son Harvest County Fair". It was a wonderful week learning all about the fruits of the spirit. They enjoyed the fun and games, the crafts, and the fellowship with all of their friends. But their favorite part was the visits to "Uncle Zeke's Red Barn" where they made their own homemade butter, cinnamon bread dough, and strawberry jam. And as you can see in the photo, they each had a chance to "milk the cow". Since cows are rare in these here parts... a cardboard cutout and dish gloves had to suffice. Bekah was so excited to show me her newly learned skill :)

Vacation

Funny how life brings about all kinds of little surprises... One month ago, Mike and I had no plans for this summer vacation. We love our down time with the kids. Mike's schedule allows for him to have extra time with them during the week when they're not at school, which feels so amazing compared to the school year when they miss out on each other because of his weekend schedule. We love just enjoying the back yard, cooking out, and going on little daytrip excursions to some of our favorite New England destinations. We haven't been on a "real" vacation in 9 years. (and let's just say that one goes more into the "learned lessons" category then the fun and relaxation one!)

About a month ago, Mike came home from picking up the kids at school. He said, "Jen wants to know if we want to go away with them the first week of summer vacation."

One of my best friends in the whole world, her husband, and their 3 youngest children (who happen to be our kids' best friends) were all planning on vacationing in The Berkshires. Jen's mother-in-law owns some time shares and wasn't able to get away to enjoy them this time around, so she welcomed them to invite some friends along. Wow. My favorite people, in one of my favorite destinations?

Now, let me tell you... I love these people so much, that I'd have said yes even if we were sleeping in tents. I knew that rain or shine the kids would have a blast together. And truth be told... after the stressful last couple of years, we all needed a vacation together.

To top everything off, my grandaughter (whom I care for during the work week) was very happy to spend some extra time with her daddy who came home from college the week before our trip. Everything fell into place just lovely. But then.....

OUCH!!! WT? I ended up in the hospital and had to have an emergency procedure done on the common duct which was blocked up with gall stones. :( Miraculously... And I mean MIRACULOUSLY we were angelically wisped into the care of a surgeon who pulled some strings and got me into the OR in just enough time to get the procedure done, and still allow me to go away. :) But then...

We were scheduled to leave Monday at 2:00 pm. During the weekend, we noticed Jacob developing spots all over his body. We didn't want to expose our hosts' children or anyone else to anything questionable, so we called the pediatrician. We were hoping to hear "Oh, that's nothing." but instead, the nurse wanted Jake to be seen because it sounded like scarlet fever, which meant accompanying strep throat and very contageous. Great. Well, thankfully... after 23+ years with this pediatrician, and the charm Mike is able to pull out of his hat, they were willing to squeeze us in immediately. I stayed home while Mike took Jake. I tried to gently break it to the other kids that if Jacob did have scarlet fever, there was no way we could go to a resort, and take the chance of infecting anyone else. But then...

My cell phone rang. It was Mike. The doctors all concurred that it was NOT scarlet fever, or 5ths disease or anything else that would cause any possible harm to anyone. Just "one of those childhood rashes"!!! YAY! So... we finished packing, and OFF WE WENT!!!

We were amazed at the lovely resort and accomodations. Our hosts were beyond generous in sharing this perfect week with us. I don't know what my favorite part was...

Herman Melville wrote "Moby Dick"...

inspired by his visions of Mt. Greylock from his study window...

Right down to the swell folks at the Tire Center in Sturbridge MA

who so kindly and graciously assisted us after our close call on the

Mass Turnpike...

Thanks to our dear friends, we had the BEST VACATION EVER! It was so chuck full of wonderful moments, and thanks to that bear encounter, I'm sure our kids will never... EVER forget our special time in The Berkshires. I am very thankful we live in Black Bear territory, as they are predominantly gentle and used to human companionship on the trails. As you can imagine, I was immediately terrified. We were three adults and six young children on the trail. My first emotions were an inner panic about protecting the kids. Mike was calm and gently, but firmly directed us to head back, while he posed as bear chow. The bear hardly took notice of us, and continued on it's way across the path and into the woods. The panic melted away into awe and excitement. Hannah was on cloud nine to have had such an experience. Rebekah? She may never go for a walk around the block again, never mind a hike in the woods... LOL! As I was unpacking our bags, I said "Oh, look Bekah... that's the dress you had on when we saw the bear." She replied, "Ya. That needs to be washed. It still has bear fear on it."

I love my family. I love my friends. And I love New England!

I have so much to be thankful for...

A Father's Day Reflection...

In this past week, my husband has chaperoned two field trips and a school dance, has made sure to purchase flowers for his girls graduating kindergarten and 5th grade, has volunteered to teach music to two kindergarten classes, which otherwise would not have had it, has checked in on his mom every day, has cleared out part of the yard for a pool, has done all of the family grocery shopping, brought the kids back and forth to school, dealt with a family emergency for our older daughter, read "Lord of the Rings" to the kids at bedtime, even though he was way too tired. This, on top of kissing all the boo-boos, grilling lunches and suppers, cuddling, playing, and walking the dog... Oh! and of course, this was all when he wasn't driving the hour to or from work throughout the week!!! And besides all that, he still finds a way to make me blush with his affection, make me laugh to my toes with his humor, and encourage me by complimenting my work.

I knew when I was 15 years old, that this guy would be an amazing father some day. But even I couldn't have imagined... My husband is the most generous man I know... totally selfless.... and giving every last drop of his time and energy for others. For 23 + years, he has been inspiring me through his fathering of our children. He is tough when he needs to be, and tender in the next heartbeat. It's no wonder we are all so crazy about him. I'm so glad it's a gorgeous day outside today, because there's no greater gift we could have wrapped for him. Can't wait for him to get home from work, so we can share his favorite meal, and smother him with affection :)

Sharing a "Funny"...

I was just sitting at the kitchen table, sharing a quiet moment with Jake, my 20 month old, when I looked over his shoulder and discovered the messages left behind by Caleb, my 9 year old. "Do Not Touch" clearly marking the newest additions to his rock collection. I guess that explains why he was asking me how to spell "touch" last night. LOL. (and I thought he was working on his story writing homework...)

With all these kids, one never knows what will be left behind in their daily wake. But this is one that put a smile on my face, and a giggle in my heart. Just had to share.

Work-A-Day Wednesday

It feels so good to have a work table full of projects again! The little ones are getting to the point where they amuse themselves for more than 30 seconds at a time. And Mike's been my "bouncer" keeping distractions away from my workroom during "working hours". It's so hard because they all love to "help" and be creative. But they are learning that there are times when they can help, and times when Mama just needs to focus on the work.

This week's work table has a folk art doll and a few paintings in progress. I'm trying to take a tip from an online friend and teacher, Mystele of Little Glimpses. She teaches a lot of classes on what she calls "gut art", and story telling through art. I'm trying to "listen" to the canvas, and let the inspiration come from within the layers, without any expectations of what the finished product "should" be. In some ways I'm loving it. But it's new for me. And the finished product of a girl I just worked on is not what I envisioned at all. I can see that this could be fun. I just have to let go of coming to the table with any visions... LOL. This way of painting allows me to use many more colors then I usually do, and I really love that. I don't worry about the "norms", and just have a blast with all the paints, pastes, brushes, and fingers :)

I still prefer working in graphite with a color wash, so I'm sure those will not disappear, but it's good to explore. My girls think this latest painting looks like a mermaid, so even though that was not my original intention, we may go with that... LOL!

Snapshot Saturday ~ "Young Love"

This "Snaphot Saturday" was an easy one. My nephew, Andrew, and his girlfriend, Marissa, went to her Senior Prom last night. They welcomed me to take a few shots of them at her parent's beautiful home. It was fun to feel the energy of all the girls as they gathered in the patio area waiting to begin such a memorable evening.

Life is so full of chapters. And although the future is just beginning, there are those few 'last things' that are such a part of closing the special chapter of those early school days... Concerts, Awards, Plays, Prom, and finally graduation. Marissa is a bright and beautiful girl. I know she will be successful at anything she puts her mind and heart into. I'm so glad my nephew found such a special person to share this time in his life with. They are both very easy to love :)

To Everything There is a Season?

I've come to a conclusion... I am not a seasonal artist. Nope. Never. Not gonna happen.

For years, I've beaten myself up about this. I keep saying "If you're ever going to be "in the game" of this business, you've got to think ahead... plan ahead... and work on seasonal themes way before those seasons actually arrive." Then those seasons come and go, and I still have nothing prepared. I get frustrated with myself for not being organized enough to realize those business goals.

But I had an epiphany this past week. That way of doing things is not my goal. Yes, it's a business. And I do need to keep that at the forefront of my plans. But it's not 'me' to create that way. One of my major life goals is to "live in the now". That's me. Every day is sacred. Every day is precious. I don't want to be surrounded by pumpkins in May, Santas in June, and Uncle Sams in December. What's more is that I am not even inspired in the least to work that way. Even "in season" I have a hard time "forcing" a themed doll or art piece. And while this is a business, it's also art, and I am just no good at trying to force anything.

Others do it beautifully. It "is" how they are inspired. They have a tremendous capacity to let the creative juices flow, and create within the themes that make perfect sense from a business perspective. I admire them. But I cannot compete with them. And I'm going to stop making myself feel bad about that.

In fact... today is my "Independence Day" of sorts. I am freeing myself from the expectations that I have placed on myself, and am going to enjoy the artistic journey wherever it brings me... through whatever season. I will enjoy everyone else's seasonal work with joy and enthusiasm without ever again wondering "what's wrong with me" that I can't get my act together.

My "act" is together! I'm just in a different play :)

Twenty-three years ago, this day, I sat... waiting... impatiently... uncomfortably. I was almost 8 months pregnant with my twins. I was on medicines to stop that labor which had already started twice, prematurely. It caused me to be jittery and retain water. The next day was Mother's Day, and we were planning a little cookout at our house. Little did I know it was the eve of the day my actual labor would begin with no turning back.

I'll spare you the dreaded blow, by blow details. But in a nutshell, after 36 hours of hard labor, my son, Joshua and daughter, Sarah were born by c-section. Things had gone rough, and I had to fight to leave the hospital by the end of the week. Mike's grandfather had died, and we wanted to be home in the embrace of our family.

I was fine, at first. But then it snuck in... the "baby blues". I was so excited about my babies, but I guess the exhaustion, the hormonal readjustment, the problems with nursing, and the whole "how could I bring such precious beings into such a sick world, all came crashing in.

When I had left for the hospital, the trees were all still hardly budding. But within two weeks, they were in full bloom. The world seemed fresh and new, but my body and spirit were having trouble catching up.

Then... one day... Mike came into the house with what seemed like miles of lilacs. Billowing handfuls, and vases, and pitchers of them.... Dark purple/pink, light purple, and white. The property line was overflowing with antique lilac hedges planted by his grandparents, and they blossomed profusely.

Those lilacs awakened such a joy in me. They reminded me of how much my husband loved me. They reminded me of all the goodness and beauty brimming in my life. The sight and scent of them just flowed through me, and uplifted me completely.

And just like that... the "baby blues" were gone.

Since that early motherhood experience, lilacs have held such a special place in my heart. And every year Mike makes sure that he and/or the kids gather billowing handfuls for mama on or about Mother's Day.

As our family grew, and we moved from that earlier home, we dug up some of the antique lilac sprouts, and brought them with us to our new home. Almost before we did anything else, we planted them along the property line of our new yard. That first spring... the very first time we revved up the ol' lawnmower, our son, Joshua, who was 13, plowed right over the lilacs with the mower, thinking that they were tall weeds.

LOL... One of the funniest memories EVER!!!

But, sure enough, they grew back even more full. It took a few years for them to fill in with blooms... quite a few years. But now, they overflow with gorgeous purple blossoms. And after all these years, no gift, no fancy dinner, no breakfast in bed compares to the joy I get from chubby little hands grasping onto the stems of lilac clusters, accompanied by a heartfelt "Happy Mother's Day"...

I hope all of the Mothers out there in "Blog Land" have a beautiful day tomorrow.

Note: I do want to make the point that in no way am I comparing my experience to the more drastic post partum depression. I know that no lilacs or other token of love can just take those serious symptoms away.

Mind, Body, and Soul...

I can't even believe it's been over a month since my last post. But it is what it is. For me, it was already a reflective time... Lent. I've always loved the "stripping away" of that season, and refocussing on how I am... or am not... living my life with and for Christ. But then, when something happens on the scale of the earthquake and tsunami that hit Japan, and the lingering nuclear crisis... I don't know. The immense suffering is so crushing. I find it hard to make small talk about vintage goodies and cloth dolls. Don't get me wrong. These things are part of my work. And I've seen folks share a lot of love and charity through such things, especially through blogging. But, at this moment in time, for this particular artsy lady, every word I've tried to utter has felt petty in light of the knowledge that moms are holding their babies tight on the other side of the planet praying the power plant miles away won't blow. I've been holding my Jake a little tighter too, and praying for those babies and their mamas.

But, I haven't been in some depressed funk either. I've been working, and doing A LOT of cleaning and reorganizing here at home. I just haven't felt "chatty". In fact, the combination of the spiritual journey of Lent mingling with the keen awareness of what really matters brought on by world events, has really kicked my butt into finally dealing with the unfinished business of moving into this house. Since we've lived here 10 years, it's about time, don't you think? For about a year, my arthritis kept me from being able to go upstairs to the second floor. In that time, it became the catch all for .... everything!!! So, an entire level of our home was demoted from bedrooms to storage to junk heap. I'm finally facing it all, and basically tossing, tossing, tossing, and more tossing. It feels really good to let go of so many things that I have held on to for way too many years, as well as things that I unwillingly inherited from everyone who needed a place to dump what they didn't have the heart to discard. My idea of what is precious has changed dramatically. It feels so good to be making our house into a home... finally.

I've also been making some personal changes. My artist friend, Robin, had been posting about this eating plan she was on. It's the McDougall Program. It was making amazing changes in her life, including reversing her type 2 diabetes. Then one day she posted about her dad being healed of his psoriatic arthritis over 30 years ago. My attention peeked up. I visited the site, and thought it would be too hard and/or impossible for me, as I have always been a passionate carnivore, and this is a plant based diet. But she challenged me to the "12 Day Challenge". And you know what? By day 2, I knew there was something to this. By day 11, I was a different person. I've gone from taking 12 pills a day to none. I had horrible acid reflux for which I took Prilosec every morning, then still needed Tums, yet was still awake all night with painful reflux. By the end of day 2, the acid reflux was GONE, and I was taking no meds. I had suffered from allergies for over 20 years, and had taken sudaphedrin and sinus pain meds daily for 20 years to combat them. By day 2 the symptoms were gone, and I needed ZERO meds. Apparently it was not allergies at all, but the effects of dairy products causing what millions of people and their MDs assume are allergies. I am also sleeping like a baby for the first time in MANY years. Then of course... there's my psoriasis and arthritis. At first, both seemed to be in a miraculous remission. Now, I am experiencing a bit of a flare up, so the next step is to discover what particular foods are triggers for me. I had no clue that the nightshade family of plants were arthritis triggers. Unfortunately, this includes both tomatoes and potatos, which were staples in my new daily routine. I can't say this part is fun, but having experienced the immense changes, I can say it's worth the effort to feel so healthy again, and not need the medications, especially the toxic Enbrel injections. On the weight aspect of it, I've lost 7 pounds since starting, but my husband has lost 12 pounds and is looking good!!! It's encouraging to do all this together.

So, what else is going on? The great new diet has given me energy and naturally caused weight loss. This has been such wonderful incentive to add exercize into my daily routine. I started off with Zumba. LOVE it!!! Once you get into the flow of the music and the moves, it is soooo easy, and soooooo energizing!!! Love, Love, Love the strength and energy exercize gives! My daughter just brought me one of her Turbo Jam DVD's, so I'll introduce that this week too. The toddlers are loving "dancing" with mumzie!!! LOL

I guess this past 40 days has been full of unexpected surprises. An extreme makeover of Spirit, Home, and Body! I haven't been creating as much as I'd like to, but getting the house in order is very inspiring, and I'm enjoying the artistic aspects of that end of things as well as looking forward to finally having my studio space finished and ready to get to work!!!

Saturday Snapshot~"Just Like Daddy"

Ever since Jake was born, he and his daddy have had a special bond. He lights up when my husband walks into a room. He imitates everything papa does. They've had a special "handshake" since before Jake was a year old (initiated by Jacob, and continued daily!). Whenever he sees Mike wearing a hat... that's it.... Jake has to confiscate it and put it on his own head.

So, the other day, when Jake disappeared around the corner from the kitchen, and returned just a moment later with Daddy's hat crookedly perched on his head, and the boots on his hands... Well, you can imagine the reaction he got from Dad. I thought Mike was going to melt into a puddle right there on the floor in front of me.

"They" say actions speak louder then words, and this was a great big "I LOVE YOU", that I just could not resist capturing, and sharing in a "Saturday Snapshot".

Friday Finds~Vintage Kitchen Charm!

Another one of my FAVORITE "Friday Finds" is this charming little piece of Kitchen kitsch. About the same time I fell in love with 'all things vintage', and decided to incorporate that style into my kitchen, I discovered her on a dusty shelf in a local ~~paradise~~... I mean junk shop ;)

I don't know if she's a plant holder, or utensil holder, but she only stands 6" tall, so I'm sure her purposes were mostly decorative. I just knew when I saw her that she was the special piece I'd been searching for to build a color scheme around.. dreamy whites, the palest pink, a touch of blues, and black to make it all pop. No red, but we'll take care of that elsewhere :)

She's placed on a spice rack waiting for the rest of the kitchen to catch up to her vintage sweetness. At the moment, she doesn't quite fit in with all the dark, distressed wood around her. But I love her. What I have grown to appreciate most about her, is that if I'm having a particularly crazy morning, she stands as a sentinel, reminding me that I need to take time for prayer, and that with the help of the Lord, I can do all things with love...

In just 10 days, this wonderful online marketplace will be opening it's doors to the delight of doll enthusiasts everywhere. Doll Town is the brain child of Jane DesRosier. She has created a lovely site, and assembled amazingly talented artists from all over the globe to offer their OOAK handmade art dolls. I am humbled to be in this mix of dollmakers, and am thrilled to share my work once again. (Most of you know I've been a bit too focussed on the two real babies in my home this past year to create any new fabric ones!) But, the timing is right, and I'm feeling very inspired to share my heart and soul through these little "works of my hands" once again. It may be winter outside, but it feels like springtime in my heart :)

I had already planned on using this sketch as my "Sacred Sunday" post, when I learned that my dear friend has once again been treated unjustly for no other reason but the color of his skin. And so, my reflection on this sacred Sunday is... How beautiful our good God must be that we... all different... are created in His same image and likeness. Yet it is no wonder we cannot find Him in this world, when we cannot see ourselves in each other. My prayer for all of us is to remember that each of us is "mightily made".

I'm really excited about this week's Friday's Find! I've been wanting to add a little bit of "funky fun" to some of my rag dolls including using more colorful wools. I went to my "go to" location for all things handmade, and was delighted to stumble upon this amazing little shop! As all of you probably know, New England, (like much of the country) has been inundated with snow, snow, and MORE snow in recent weeks. Visiting Hi-Fiber Kits on Etsy was like a breath of Spring Air!!! The variety of colors is DREAMY. The pricing is very reasonable, and the choice of amounts was spectacular. I went with a bunch of 1oz sizes so that I could "test drive" them! I cannot tell you how excited I am to get this package, and add some colorful locks to some of these little ragamuffins waiting for their "do's"!

It's so wonderful to be working again. I've got a whole new line of dolls cut, sewn, stuffed, and having personalities added... LOL. Some are more Prim and some are more Whimsy, but I am in love with them all. My husband said the one pictured below reminds him of somebody he knows. I took that as a big compliment, because each doll is a piece of my heart and soul... I'm glad he sees it in her even if he doesn't realize it :)

As it is Sunday, I'm not working today. But the kids and I are doing some artsy fun stuff, and waiting for Daddy to come home. But for the first time in a long time, I am sooo looking forward to the work week ahead :)

I started participating in Creative Every Day at the end of 2009. I love that it's a low pressure challenge. But there are monthly themes and weekly challenges for anyone who wants to join in the fun of keeping the creative juices flowing. The other thing that I REALLY love about this creative challenge is that it's not just about visual art. Like many artists, I love so many ways to join in the "creative expression", including the written word. So... If painting isn't "in the muse" for that day and poetry is... I can still share what has come from my heart. I wasn't really good at connecting on a weekly basis, and I want to try that more this year. I missed yesterday's link up, but I've been wanting to make a painting for my grandbaby, Adleigh. She is soooo fun. When she visits the zoo, she is always smitten with the flamingos. Thus, Mumzie has bought her every stuffed flamingo she can find... LOL! The other day I saw a painting of a flamingo with the same "poofy" hairstyle as Adleigh. I knew I had to do some kind of whimsical portrait of Adleigh with a "pet" flamingo. Below are the rough sketches. *Special thanks goes out to my hubster who "Oh so carefully" offered the gentle critique that flamingos legs bend the "other" way.... LOL! He makes everything I do so much more fun :)

I can already see the changes I want to make, but I'm glad to be getting in the swing of things while we're still in January ;)

Resolutions...

Yowza... I've been trying to think of a clever way to deal with the fact that I haven't posted here since before Halloween. Should I just "fake it" and post an illustration Friday sketch as if no time has passed? Maybe no one would notice??? Or should I post volumes of information and pictures about all of the events, celebrations, and mishaps which have occured since my last post? Na.

I'm human. You know the story... Love. Kids. Sickie/Ickies. Broken Camera. Misfunctioning Laptop. Overwhelmed. Overjoyed... Life!

But this is my life too. Sometimes I think this is my "selfish" side. My art and my online community of friends are where I am "Linda Pinda", I engage in adult conversations, indulge in the many wonders of my online friends' art worlds, etc. I LOVE it here :) And I have to remind myself that it is not selfish. In fact... I need, very firmly, to remind myself that my family needs me to take this more seriously, so that I can continue to work from home. Funny, how something doesn't "feel" like work when you enjoy it. But I do indeed need to get down to the business of this business ;)

It's a New Year. I considered renewing last year's resolution to make art every day. Then the baby puked all over tarnation New Year's Day, and I knew God was laughing. Ok... maybe not laughing... but surely giggling a little. And so... I am giving it all over to Him. Surely He wants me to be more organized and committed to the work that I do. Surely He wants me to use my time and talents as best I can to glorify His name and help provide for my family. Surely He wants me to be SANE!!! But, alas... my life has always been most fulfilling when I have not tried to force my agenda, but follow confidently where He leads.

And so, while I have many hopes, and goals both personal and professional for this coming year, my only real resolution is to live by the following prayer:

I have found that no wiser words were ever written. And believe that it really is the answer to so many emotional, physical, and spiritual challenges. It's the secret to "letting go". It's the secret to staying strong. And it brings about such an inner peace to live by this prayer. Remembering these few words in difficult moments has transformed my life, and now I am hoping to remember them in all instances so that I can be an instrument of peace for my family as well.

Little Glimpses

I am a very happy camper, doubly thanks to Mystele of Little Glimpse's Studio. I've blogged before about how much I love Mystele, and her art, and her classes, and her youtube videos, and... well, you get the picture ;) Some folks just make the world a better place by being who they are, and I think she does that beautifully. What's more is how generous Mystele is in sharing what she learns on her journey of life and art.

I've been wanting to purchase a piece of Mystele's artwork for quite some time. There was a lovely little painting that really spoke to me, and I kept visiting her etsy shop. But alas... while on hiatus, my paypal account hath dwindled, so I've been careful. One day my husband surprised me and made a deposit as a little gift. I "ran" over to etsy knowing exactly what I hoped was still there. But... Oh No!!! Little Glimpse's etsy shop was empty!!! UGH! Mystele was doing a local art show the following day. She must have taken everything out of the shop for the show!!! I could NOT BELIEVE my terrible timing. I was soooo bummed.

Well... In the following week, Mystele posted about the great show. I was happy for her, but still "grieving" the loss of "my" little painting. As one week passed into another, we (her ~~groupies~~... I mean faithful followers... hee hee) began ~~hounding~~... I mean requesting ;) when her shop might be restocked. She teased us a bit with updates promising a grand re-opening, and even posted pictures of some of the goodies. "My" little painting was not among the photos, so I was pretty certain that someone had taken "my" treasure home to their house. Lucky them :(

I logged onto Etsy at the time and date Mystele posted the site would be re-filled. Yep... just as I suspected. There were many lovely pieces, but "mine" was absent. "Ok... I'll just browse, and choose another".

Then "IT" happened!!! As I was browsing... I saw the painting... "MY" painting... pop into the window of "other items offered by seller". You've never seen a set of fingers dance on a computer keyboard so fast in your life!!! LOL!

And "just like that" Mystele's painting "Winter", really did become "my" little painting. I love it even more in person, and am sooooo happy to have a special piece from someone I've come to admire so much hanging in my humble little home.

Now, I did mention "doubly" thanks, right? Well, one of the generous things Mystele does is offer workshops through her ning community site, Little Glimpses Studio. She also offers "mini" courses from time to time. And sometimes she even offers free tutorial/workshops to her site members! Presently, we are enjoying "Free Playtime #1". It's such a great community, and such a breath of fresh air for me to enjoy such a splash of color in my day :)

French Door Dreams... A Great Friday Find!!!

Look what my hubby just bought me! I know... some women like diamonds, long stemmed roses, and fancy dinners. Me? I like old doors with glass knobs, wild flowers, and a big pot of homemade soup (which I'm more than happy to make while he drives the two hours there and back to pick up these beauties!!!)

I've had a vision to create an accent between my dining room and living room. I wanted to create a partial "wall", but still have the open feeling between the two rooms. There used to be french doors there, and it just triggered this wonderful dream in my mind... But to find the door was another challenge! They are either new or expensive... or in horrible condition. I've been eyeing these on Craig's List, and thought for sure they'd be snagged before I could get to them. But divine providence and my dear hubby made it all happen :) And for the price of what most folks would charge for just those gorgeous glass knobs! Now, that's a find :D

I really hope it all comes together the way I see it. I'm going to attempt to post the process.

This week's Photo Friday word prompt is "Architecture"

I knew right away I would use a snapshot I took while visiting my friend's new home. She lives in a wonderful historic old house with a sprawling porch. Every morning while she sips her coffee and reads a favorite book, she gets to look out over the lush landscaping and see this... Kind of hard not to start off the day with your heart and mind centered on greater things when you've got this kind of a view!

Life being what it is... My "Tips and Tricks Tuesday" post didn't get started until almost midnight on Tuesday. Thus, it's actually going to be posted on Wednesday, which is usually my "Work-A-Day Wednesday" post. Then I figured, what the heck... since it's my website I'm working on anyway, it all worked out in the end! Have I lost you yet? Well, stay with me. I'm excited to share some neato info with you :) If you want to skip my ~~drama~~ charm, you can just scroll down to see where the info on customizing the free website is!

Working on my website has been one of "those" exercises for me. Once again, it involved a little fear, a little letting go, and (thank God) a little leap of faith in something new.

You see... when I opened my website, almost 4 years ago, my main focus was the world of Primitives. And one important factor in that online world is to create a warm atmosphere. Each primitive seller wants to reflect the same feeling for their customers that they would in a brick and mortar shop. Heck... if we could add an app that allowed for a scented candle aroma, we'd all have it! Since I also design web graphics, I worked and re-worked my little site a few times until I finally had just the right look. But then...

Well... a few things happened. Because of ebay's change in policy, I virtually stopped selling my templates, which were the largest part of my business. Then I discovered I was expecting a baby. My age and illness made for a difficult 9 months, so I took that time off. Most of you know the tale of the last year, so I won't bore you to tears, but I've been more than a little busy caring full time for my baby, and my grand-baby who is 2 months his junior. Why, "yes" my gray hairs have been filling in a little faster. Thanks for asking. Nothing a little Loreal "Warm Maple Brown" can't take care of ;)

During this crazy wonderful time, my focus has shifted. While I still love primitives and intend to continue making the time-worn items I love... I have really fallen in love with sketching and painting again. And I am continuing to fall more and more in love with digital photography, and the layered art of it all.

Ok... time to shorten this 'long story'. I love graphics. I am a graphics NUT, in fact. But... I find that when one is selling art, a solid background makes more sense for a presentation. I don't want my art to compete for attention among the checks, stripes, and florals, you know? I went "white" with my blog a while back. I may mix things up by doing black now and again, but I really like the white for now. I wanted my website to reflect my new focus as well.

So, easy/peasy, right? Well, for most well-adjusted folks maybe. But not Linda Pinda. Nope. You see... 4 years ago, when I opened my website, I chose a free host. At the time, it was Freewebs dot com. One can operate the free site which contains ads. Or... for the low fee of $19.95/year, you can register a domain name, and POOF, no more ads! (I think for an even lower fee, the ads can be removed, but who doesn't want their own domain name, right?). I really loved the site, but the template choices... though many... didn't quite fit the specialized/unique look I wanted. Because my focus is much more on graphics then on the technical knowledge of HTML and CSS, it took me forever... but I did it! I took a basic template choice and chopped the heck out of it, until it "fit" me.

Along came a change. Freewebs dot com became Webs dot com. Don't you know... these folks had some new fangled ideas. ugh... When I went in to modify my site, the editing was all changed. AND... the ability to work on the CSS in the way that I had is no longer available. Mind you... there is an entire CSS template, but one has to have a much better grip on the tech side of things then I do to use it. I had the option to choose a new template. But it was clear that there would be no going back. I would lose everything I had personalized. So... there my site sat for a LLLLOOOONNNNGGGG time. I was afraid to lose the unique look I had. A look I wanted to change. (I told you.... to a well-adjusted person, this would have been a much simpler task).

Well... this past week, the "obvious" finally hit me like a ton of bricks. What sense does it make to hold onto something for fear that I'll lose it, if it's not even what I want anymore??? I guess it was just letting go that was hard. It had been quite an accomplishment for me, and remembering those long nights just made it too difficult to "delete" so quickly. But alas... moving forward is ALWAYS better than looking back. I did it. With one click, my CSS was gone, and I was faced with the possibilities of disappointment and confusion.

But, guess what? It took me only a few moments to realize that the changes Webs.com made were wonderful! In just a few clicks, and a little trial and error, I found the perfect template for my banner and the layout I wanted! Now, the site's CSS is much more like what blogger uses in it's design page. You just click on the section you want to change and can preview it all there. You can upload ANY background, and use any banner. Depending on the template, you may have to play around a lot to get the banner to fit just right. But the one I chose has a huge header, so I can't image not being able to customize this a million different ways.

Below is the template I chose. It's called "Colourise". It's available in a few color combos. I chose black. Then I went into CSS, and added my banner, changed the background colors, fonts and font colors, and added a sidebar.

And now... It looks like this:

I still have a lot to add to it, obviously. But let me tell ya'... Webs.com sure has made it easy to add everything you could want. From the sidebar customization, to the store/selling pages, the form element pages, the links page (AMAZING!!!), photo gallery pages, and even an Etsy Store page!!! Wowza... I am so sorry I didn't dig in sooner. It's so easy to use. One other thing offered on the site is "membership". Thus, it can be used as a group/social network/workshop type site. The membership info will show up on the sidebar, but all you have to do is "uncheck" the box for the homepage, and other pages, and it will "disappear" :) But I'm glad to know it's available if I should ever decide to give any tutorials, etc.

I've always been happy with the site, and customer service and support has been wonderful. I've paid the $20.00/month for a primitive site through one of the DIY prim site builders, and I found it to be so much more difficult to navigate. For the same price FOR A YEAR, Webs.com is really keeping me a happy camper. Someone once warned me that a downside to free web hosts is the possibility of them closing down. I suppose that's true. But in the four years I've been with this host, I've seen two of those $20.00/month sites close and have had friends scramble to find a new host and set up a new site. I guess there are no guarantees. But if you do a little research, I think you'll see that Webs.com is growing a respected reputation and is offering an amazing product for the money.

There are other ways to stretch your dollar, and still have a nice site. When I discovered a couple of years ago that some of the group merchant sites were actually created using blogger, I did a lot of online digging, and found great resources to figure out how to make a static homepage, and create buttons to link to the other pages, etc. Here's a link to a sample site I created using blogger. Of course, it does not have a unique domain name attached to it because it's just a sample. But it shows that you can indeed have a lovely little site without breaking the bank. Sample Blogger . There's a lot more you can add to it, but this shows the basics of the static page, and how to use the "labels" to create the link pages for buttons. Once all your buttons are created, you just remove the "labels" element and the buttons do the work instead of the text.
